The Four Way Test
The Object of Rotary
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage & foster:
- FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
- SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
- THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
- FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Our History
Bill Cluse, Syracuse Rotary, arranged to have a meeting at TCS Superintendent, Dan Porter’s office attended by approx 20 local business leaders/managers. He wanted to form a new Rotary Club in Tully. None of us had a real notion of what Rotary was all about, but we all agreed to give it a try.
Bill made arrangements with a local restaurant, and started holding meetings every Thursday morning at 7:00. After a couple of months we realized Bill had done all he could do, and now it was up to us to make it happen. Linda McHerron, Mike McNerney, Terri Albrecht, along with myself, formed a core group to make the new Tully Rotary Club a success.
Our first service project was to help in the construction of a playground at the Tully Elementary School. With Chris Chapman’s help we held our first fundraiser at Song Mt. which included the Moo Run, a dunking booth that Chris Weiler will not forget, an auction, book sale, and Jumpin’ Joe Whiting supplying the music. With that auspicious beginning, we became a “can do” presence in the Tully, LaFayette, and Fabius area.
In keeping with Rotary’s service to humanity, we helped fund and load a tractor trailer with building supplies destined for hurricane relief in North Carolina; help fund a dam for a village in Mexico; sent sewing machines to the Dominican Republic, and even sent one of our members (Rev. Jim Austin) and a container of computers to Peru.
Over the past 33 years the Tully Rotary Club has become a vital organization with its focus on service to Youth, Community, the Environment, and Humanity. Along the way, we squeezed in a few fun projects like a garage sale in Linda McHerron’s front yard, Paul Olsen’s and Ray Cates’ (cooked thirteen hours) pulled pork sandwiches, and, of course, the World Famous Chili Cook Off.
