Tully Rotary Ecological and Environmental Sustainability

T.R.E.E.S. Initiative

Program Overview

Summary

The TREES Initiative will be a major effort focused on improving the environment in the Southern Hills and around the world.

It will create a central theme for a range of additional future projects, and it will help Tully Rotary connect with the community.

Our main fundraiser is our golf tournament on May 18th 2024.

Proceeds from the golf tournament will help fund the
Tully Rotary Ecological and Environmental Sustainability (T.R.E.E.S.) project.

These projects include:

-Operation Pollination

It is simple to do, and costs nothing.  Basically all we need to do is come up with a pollinator resolution, which is just our pledge to protect and encourage pollinators in our area. A project like this can provide interesting and engaging PR for our project, as well as working towards our goal. https://operationpollination.net

-Adopt-A-Highway.  We have adopted a section of Route 11 in Tully.  We meet periodically at the United Community Church to care for our section.  Check our calendar for dates and times.

-Earth Day Clean up will be on April 20th this year.

-Global Grant Project-

Bamboo farm project: Living Hope High School cuts 2-3 trees a day, 7 days a week. During the past 7 years that we have been here, the trees have gotten smaller, farther away, and more expensive. The expense for firewood is almost as much as food! It is their second biggest expense. We have been in search of a solution and Bamboo seems to be a  possible solution. The community is in the same predicament. The rate of deforestation is very alarming. Soon there will be no trees and other sources of fuel will be far beyond the budget of the local people.  UPDATE: Our Global Grant project in Kenya has begun!

The first step is to ensure leaders at the 30+ Vocational Training Centers where nearly 9000 avocado trees will be planted understand the project in detail.

To this end, our Rotary partners in Kenya had a “wonderful” sensitization training session at an avocado model farm with 40 VTC principals, a Bungoma County Director, the County Chief Officer for Education, the County Minister for Education, several Vocational Training sub county officers from the Department of education and 40 principals. The president of Rotary Club Siaya, the Rotary Regional coordinator and eight club members from Rotary Club Siaya came. There were also ten members of Rotary Club Bungoma Magharibi and 3 Rotaracters.

-In the future, a project to create and maintain hiking trails, especially around Friendship Falls on Woodmancy Road, may be an option. The DEC will likely require several years to acquire the land from Honeywell and so this is not an immediate project.

Progress
Trees Planted 100%
Our Pledge

We pledge to plant 1,000 trees over the next 5 years (2021 start) in the Tully area. Each tree will represent a thing of beauty as well as a way to improve the environment by improving air quality, drinking water and more.  Update!  We are well past our original goal but will continue in this important venture.

AND,  this year’s trees will be available in April!  We will have more seedlings of different varieties coming for YOU for free!
